  46.    keep CPIC the best you can get.  We really do listen,
  47.    and make software changes based on personal user input.

  50. Q: How can I register CPIC?

  52. A: With CPIC running, Pull down the 'Help' menu and select
  53.    the "Ordering CPIC" option.  Registration takes just a
  54.    few minutes and is done using a registration password, so
  55.    you will be up and running instantly.

  58. Q: Which version of CPIC do I have?

  60. A: At the top of this file, there is a date, a version number
  61.    and a build number.  The version number is related to
  62.    significant feature enhancements and the build number is
  63.    related to minor problem fixes and enhancements.  This
  64.    information is also at the bottom of the opening window.

  67. Q: How often does Photodex release new versions?

  69. A: New versions of CPIC are released often.  For the latest
  70.    version, check the Photodex forum(s) on CompuServe, and the
  71.    internet.  Try to keep updated as Photodex is always fixing
  72.    bugs and adding new features.

  77. A: Check CompuServe (GO Photodex), and the web
  78.    (www.photodex.com), or FTP to ftp.photodex.com.   The
  79.    current revision histories and builds are always listed.

  82. Q: How may I distribute CPIC?
  83. ---------------------------------
  84. A: The CPIC software may be distributed freely in the original
  85.    form as downloaded from from any of Photodex's authorized
  86.    distribution outlets.  You are not permitted to modify CPIC
  87.    from its original (self-extracting) form, and you are not
  88.    permitted to distribute any installed copy.  Distribution
  89.    of any Photodex registration passwords is a breach of the
  90.    license agreement, and is punishable by law.  Please refer
  91.    to the licensing agreement in the CPIC installation program
  92.    or in the CPIC help contents for more.  CD-ROM publication
  93.    is described in the VENDOR.TXT file.

  97. Known Problems & Application Notes
  98. ==================================
  99. * Crash problems involving the DEF.PHD file have been chronic
  100.   on certain systems and are corrected in CPIC 1.50 and later.
  101.   If you have a problem with the stability of CPIC after
  102.   version 1.50, please contact Photodex immediately.
  103.  
  104. * There is a known problem with Diamond Speedstar video
  105.   adapters (and some others) which can crash the machine when
  106.   displaying images which are exactly 1024 bytes wide.  This
  107.   is a bug in Diamond's video driver, and cannot be worked
  108.   around without severely handicapping CPIC for all other
  109.   users.  To correct the problem, use the Advanced Image
  110.   Viewer Options and change the Max VBIT Width to 512.

  112. * Most software-only MPEG MCI drivers have many bugs.
  113.   Photodex has not yet found a good enough MPEG decoder to
  114.   recommend it with 100 confidence, but we are actively
  115.   working on a solution which is good enough for everyone.

  117. * The AutoDesk FLI MCI driver is buggy in full screen mode,
  118.   and can crash the machine.  There is no fix.  For more
  119.   information, contact AutoDesk.
  120.  
  121. * Some MCI drivers have a bug which leaves the multimedia
  122.   file open after playback.  Deleting these files becomes
  123.   impossible because of a sharing violation until after the
  124.   system has been restarted.  Restart the system to delete
  125.   these files.

  127. * Some CD-ROM drivers have a bug which can crash the system
  128.   if a music CD is in the drive when CPIC checks to verify the
  129.   media.  To work around this problem, uncheck the "CD-ROM
  130.   discs" checkbox in the "Instant Help Text" section of the
  131.   Path List Options dialog box.
  132.  
  133. * Many Windows 95 video drivers crash when 320x240 mode is
  134.   used for instant zooming in the viewer.  To avoid this,
  135.   disable the 320x240 mode option in the Options menu of the
  136.   image viewer.
  137.  
  138. * CD-ROM Changers:  Avoid them if possible.  They're cheaper
  139.   than separate CD drives, but very inefficient for software
  140.   accessing multiple CD's at once.  CPIC has been set up to
  141.   minimize the number of disc-changes.  For the best results,
  142.   let CPIC read through all of our CD's in the changer(s)
  143.   before trying to use CPIC.  CPIC will stop indexing the
  144.   discs when it has read enough information, and you should be
  145.   able to use CPIC from then on without much trouble.  Also,
  146.   avoid queuing thumbnail creation on CD's in the same CD
  147.   changer at the same time.

  149.   TO CREATE THUMBNAILS OF THOUSANDS OF FILES SPREAD ACROSS
  150.   MANY CD'S USING A CD-ROM CHANGER:  (1) Let CPIC work until
  151.   it stops changing CD's.  (2) In the File List options, turn
  152.   off the "auto-create" options.  (3) Select a CD's path in
  153.   the path list to the left.  (4) Select Expand Path in the
  154.   Paths menu.  (5) Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you've expanded
  155.   all of the CD's you want to catalog.  (5) Select the entire
  156.   range of open paths, so you get a display of all of the
  157.   files.  (6) Press Ctrl+A to select all of the entries.
  158.   (7) Click on the thumb button and go to sleep for a few
  159.   hours (or days, depending on how many drives you have!)
